Factors affecting swine production in China are very dynamic, and this year has proven to be especially so. Market and trade forces affecting prices for pigs as well as feed and other inputs have been changing dramatically. Swine diseases have continued to play a significant role in how pigs are raised and marketed in China.

The Leman China Conference organisers always seek to feature speakers and presentations that provide relevant, science-based information so that attendees receive the most current and helpful solutions to the many challenges faced by pig producers.

This year the conference organisers have chosen to adjust the meeting content in light of new circumstances in China, with a greater focus on biosecurity programme development, monitoring and risk assessments in addition to important topics on efficient production of pigs. Experts from China, Canada, Europe and the US will present information on farm-tested approaches and up to date research on a broad range of topics. (http://en.lemanchina.com/cnt_list_18_1.html)

Africa swine fever effect

The breakout of African Swine Fever in China has presented a particularly significant challenge for organising the Leman China Conference this year, with the organisers closely monitoring the ASF situation in China. As the largest swine conference in China providing science-driven solutions, Leman China is aware of the needs of the industry for fighting this devastating disease at global level.

As a result, the conference programme has been revised several times to address these needs more precisely. We want to thank our speakers for their cooperation and flexibility. We want to thank conference sponsors, co-organisers, supporters, collaborators, exhibitors, and participants for your patience, continuous support, trust, and cooperation.

Additional focus topics

In addition to other important topics, this year’s programme features the Next Generation Veterinarian forum. Interest among the young veterinarians has been increasing and this drives the high quality of the presentations at the forum.

Topics at the Leman China Conference this year will include intensive materials on biosecurity and compliance; the roles of feed and transportation in pathogen transmission; a leadership summit on making biosecurity profitable; and an ASF breakout session on preclinical diagnosis and first-hand experiences from producer presenters on measures to keep disease out of farms. 34 poster presentations will also be on display at the Leman China conference. It is encouraging that the presenters are actively participating and willing to share their information with conference attendees.

Disease outbreaks certainly bring challenges and pressure to the swine industry. It is also an opportunity for industry to become more resilient to adversity through collaboration, innovation, and sharing. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect their own farm, other people’s farms, and the national and global swine herds. We believe that working together; we will make the swine industry stronger.

Recommendations if attending

If you are planning your travel to attend the Leman China Swine Conference and World Swine Industry Expo, the following is recommended:

  • Do not wear or bring shoes and clothes that have been used on farms
