In a report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in a village in Cherkasy Oblast, in the heart of Ukraine.
The discovery was reported to the OIE on November 5.
Loss of 274 pigs
One pig in a village in the Prydniprovskiy district, on a subsistence farm, was found to have died from the virus, after which the other 273 pigs in the village were culled for safety reasons.
Ukraine has had ASF within its borders since 2012. The disease has also spread to many other Eastern European countries, including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The virus has been around in the Caucasian area since 2007.
