African Swine Fever virus has found entrance to yet another country. A first-ever infection has been reported from Bosnia-Herzegovina this June.

The virus was confirmed on 22 June in 1 dead domestic pig on a farm in the village Dragaljevac Srednji, near Bijeljina in the north east of the country, located within 5km of the border with neighbouring Serbia. Suspicions of ASF virus had started a day earlier. According to a report by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), there were no other pigs on the farm.

Bosnia-Herzegovina is the 22nd country in Europe to detect ASF, since genotype II of the virus made its entrance to Europe in the Kaukasian area in 2007. It has already been found in neighbouring Serbia since August 2019. Even though occurrence and severity differed from country to country, the virus has been found in various other countries in the Balkans, including Bulgaria and Greece.
