No more therapeutic levels of zinc oxide in weaner diets: that is the reality for swine producers in the European Union starting in 2022. What will it mean for pig producers in the EU? The podcast series The Real P3 visited Colin Twomey in Ireland to learn more.
The Real P3 podcast series is a recent initiative, where pork professionals from all over the world are interviewed about challenges and solutions in their day-to-day work.
In this 6th episode of the podcast series, Dr Casey Bradley talks to Colin Twomey, age 25, who runs a 200 sow farrow-to-finish operation in Co. Cork, southern Ireland. He read animal and crop production at University College, Dublin, Ireland and is following a PhD focusing to remove therapeutic levels of zinc oxide from nursery diets.
The farm was set up by Twomey’s father in 1994 which was initially set up as a finishing farm. When he started working for the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority (Teagasc), he learnt about the opportunity to do a PhD in zinc oxide reduction.
