Podcast: Danish market update

The Real P3 podcast series is an initiative where pork professionals from around the globe share their thoughts, insights, and solutions to their day-to-day challenges in the pig farming and production industry.

Krogsgaard has been a farmer since 1991 when he took over the family farm, the Mogensgaard Farm in Western Jutland, Denmark, with 130 sows on 30 hectares of land. He has since developed the farm with his family and today has 2,700 sows, producing about 90,000 pigs per year on 1,100 hectares of land.

“Some of the best swine producers in the world”

Having been involved with the Danish Crown for almost 20 years now, Krogsgaard speaks about the Cooperative and notes that it is the only cooperative slaughterhouse in Denmark, owned by about 2,000 pork producers and 5,000 cattle producers. They slaughter 17.5 million pigs per year equating to 70% of Denmark’s swine production. Dr Bradley believes Denmark has some of the best swine producers in the world.

Krogsgaard speaks about what producers in the country are experiencing considering the situation of the war in Ukraine and highlights the big difference between the feed price and the meat price. He also talks about the impact that ASF in Germany and Covid-19 in China have had on the Danish port market.

Dr Bradley asks what measures are being taken to keep ASF out of Denmark, to protect the country’s borders and export markets, and what political issues might have an impact on the industry.
